Effective April 9, 2025, Ohio’s OVI (Operating a Vehicle Impaired) laws are changing to become stricter and more comprehensive. Here’s what you need to know:
• Stricter Penalties: If you’re a repeat offender, expect tougher consequences such as longer license suspensions, higher fines, and mandatory community service or treatment programs.
• Increased Use of Ignition Interlock Devices (IIDs): Courts may require more drivers—including some first-time offenders—to install IIDs that test breath-alcohol levels before the car can start. Proper compliance with IID requirements can sometimes shorten penalties or suspensions.
• License Suspension Changes: Law enforcement will have broader authority to issue immediate suspensions if you refuse a chemical test or show signs of impairment. However, there may be opportunities to apply for limited driving privileges for essential needs (work, medical, or education).
Legal Guidance is Essential: Fogt Law can help you:
1. Examine Evidence (breathalyzer or dashcam records) to ensure proper procedures were followed.
2. Negotiate Lesser Penalties when possible.
3. Advocate in Court for fair treatment and protect your driving privileges.

In Ohio, OVI charges apply not only to operating a vehicle under the influence of alcoholic beverages, but also to any “drug of abuse,” which includes all controlled substances, harmful intoxicants, and dangerous drugs defined by Ohio law. Secondly, our state has opted to use the phrase “Operating a Vehicle,” which Ohio law defines as “to cause of have caused movement,” rather than the word “Driving.”

Divorce involves significant financial changes. Before the process, gather financial documents, assess assets, and create a post-divorce budget. During the divorce, monitor credit reports, close joint accounts, and negotiate fair settlements. After the divorce, update financial documents, establish a financial plan, and rebuild credit. These steps help ensure financial stability and security.

On March 11, 2021, the American Rescue Plan Act was signed into law by President Biden. An important provision of the new law involves temporary changes to the child tax credit. For the 2021 tax year only, the credit has been increased from $2,000 to $3,000 for each child age six or older. For children age five and younger, the credit has been further increased to $3,600.

Voting is a fundamental cornerstone of American democracy. Every year Ohioans cast votes for candidates of their choice. Citizens often contact my office with questions about the voting process, particularly around election time.
